Police on Wednesday laid charges against a 22-year-old Edmonton man who allegedly shot at police during a traffic stop Sunday.

Officers pulled over a Toyota 4Runner Sunday night as it drove east on 100th Avenue near 159th Street.

Seconds after the SUV pulled over, the driver got out and shot at officers. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Police returned fire, shattering the vehicle’s back window as it sped away.

A tip led police to the abandoned SUV around 4 a.m. Monday.

Police then followed a chain of evidence to Redwater Tuesday, where a man had barricaded himself in a motel room. The suspect fired shots, and the RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed.

After a seven-hour standoff, a man was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. No one was injured in the incident.

Patrick Young, 22, has been charged with 31 criminal charges including four charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, flight from a peace officer and numerous firearms charges.

Police also executed 20 criminal warrants for Young, including escaping lawful custody. Additional charges are pending from the Redwater RCMP, stemming from Tuesday’s standoff. Young remains in custody. Police believe they have identified the woman who was a passenger in the SUV when it was stopped on Sunday, but Acting Insp. Dan Jones was not sure whether or not police had spoken with her by Wednesday night.

Jones said the charges are a successful conclusion to a traumatic event.

“We’re extremely happy this ended the way it did and there’s no injuries to anyone,” he said.
