A 22-year-old Edmonton man who allegedly shot at police during a traffic stop, then barricaded himself in a Redwater motel, will face dozens of charges in provincial court Friday.

Patrick Glenn Young is scheduled to appear on 51 charges connected to two separate incidents — one on Sunday night and one on Sept. 27.

Events in west Edmonton on Sunday night led to 31 of those charges, including four counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of aggravated assault, numerous firearms charges including possession of a prohibited firearm, along with nine counts of breaching a recognizance.

At about 9:20 p.m. Sunday, officers stopped a Toyota 4Runner driving east on 100th Avenue near 159th Street. Seconds after the SUV stopped, the driver got out and shot at officers. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Police returned fire, shattering the vehicle’s back window as it sped away. A tip then led police to the abandoned SUV around 4 a.m. Monday.

The investigation led officers to a motel in Redwater, 60 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, where a man barricaded himself in a room on Christmas Day. The RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed when the suspect fired shots.

Police took a man into custody after a seven-hour standoff that ended around 2:30 p.m. No one was injured.

Redwater RCMP are expected to lay charges in connection with the Tuesday standoff, but said Thursday the investigation is ongoing and charges had not yet been laid.

Along with the charges that stem from Sunday, Young is also in court Friday to enter pleas on 20 charges connected to events in Edmonton on Sept. 27.

Those charges include assaulting a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, escaping lawful custody, possessing a prohibited weapon, uttering a forged document, possessing stolen property under $5,000, traffic offences and seven charges of breaching a recognizance.
