Not sure why the Vancouver Canucks were so upset about the Toronto Maple Leafs telling them they wanted Vancouver to eat a percentage of Roberto Luongo’s contract. The Buffalo Sabres are doing it for Jason Pominville (15 per cent). OK, Pominville’s contract ends after next season, but even if it was 25 per cent of the $40 million left on Luongo’s deal, that’s $10 million to say goodbye — they save $30 million.

When I’ve seen Michal Handzus, he’s looked like a Clydesdale on blades, but St. Louis Blues head Ken Hitchcock says the trade deadline pickup by the Chicago Blackhawks is a good one. He set up the only goal in Chicago’s win over the Nashville Predators Saturday.

When the NHL salary cap comes down to $64.3 million next season, two of the Boston Bruins’ casualties could be defenceman Andrew Ference and winger Nathan Horton, both unrestricted free agents.

Jeff Tambellini, the eldest son of Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini, will be playing for Markus Naslund’s team in MoDo in Sweden next year after time in the Swiss League. Tambellini’s other son, Adam, will be a teammate of Dillon Simpson at the University of North Dakota in the fall.

Eric Staal has made it clear he’ll play from now on under a visor after brother Marc’s scare with the New York Rangers. Marco got hit by a puck near his eye, but the third brother, Jordan, isn’t so sure he’ll keep the visor on for good or just until the end of this season with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Calgary Flames observers watching Mike Cammalleri have been shaking their heads. He’s a shadow of the player he was the first time around in Calgary. He’s an expensive shadow at $7 million this year and next.

The jury’s very much out on flashy Czech forward Roman Cervenka in Calgary. He may be a one-year look and a thanks and goodbye.

The Vancouver Canucks, in sending Zack Kassian to the AHL for a game, after he was deemed ready to play but sat during the Edmonton Oilers’ 4-0 win at Rexall Place March 31, was a message demotion. They want him to grow up.
