Student art and literature came to life Thursday night in two very different events, beginning with Ready to Frame, a fundraiser for the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation.
Dozens of artworks filled the Chateau Nova Kingsway as art lovers and supporters bid on items produced by students from local high schools in a fundraiser to support children’s access to full-day kindergarten.
Guests enjoyed appetizers and a cash bar while surveying the art, which ranged from bright, abstract paintings and surreal representations to impressive portraits and landscapes.
After my artistic appetites were satiated, I headed to the University of Alberta for Glass Buffalo’s launch party at Dewey’s Pub. Students and supporters of the literary magazine congregated for drinks and an introduction of the publication’s origins, including readings from contributors to the Winter 2013 issue.
Spearheaded by editor Matthew Stepanic, the biannual magazine showcases the finest work from creative writing and design students at the University of Alberta. It is available for purchase at locations across the city including Audreys Books, Chapters Strathcona and The Untitled Bookshop.
Look for me on Saturday, April 13 at the Avenue of Hope Gala at the Italian Cultural Centre and on Sunday, April 14 at the Child Haven dinner at the Meridian Banquet and Conference Centre.
