Praise for our city’s ‘first lady’

-

Re: “Mandel won’t rule out provincial politics; Mayor dismisses ‘rumours’ as race to replace him heats up,” the Journal, May 23. I read with interest all the favourable articles about Stephen Mandel after he announced he’s bowing out of civic politics after 12 years.

Mandel has served us well, becoming a mayor of “the people.” He listened and was relentless is helping us see a better future.

But I want to bring visibility to someone on his team who worked as tirelessly as he did: his wife, Lynn.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lynn Mandel when asked to join the fundraising campaign for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. She is a true ambassador for the city and is in her own right as committed to bettering Edmonton as her husband is.

She is a tireless volunteer for the arts, women’s issues and the Royal Alexandra Hospital, to name a few of her endeavours.

Plus, she was at her husband’s side at event after event. She is gracious, classy, approachable and delightful to engage in any conversation on how to improve our lives in Edmonton.

Among her many roles, she chairs the fundraising campaign for the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System for the Lois Hole Hospital.

This new system will be an important advancement in treatment and care for women with gynecological cancers. She is passionate about improving health outcomes for women.

Let’s applaud the efforts of the city’s “first lady.” The Mandels have both done a tremendous amount for our city.

We will miss them both. Cathy MacDonald, Edmonton
