Thank you, and farewell

-

Goodbye, Canada.

In two weeks, I am leaving the country.

It is not easy to leave behind people who are chivalrous, generous and kind. Those characteristics were inspirational to me, an Arabic woman who grew up in a culture that respects those qualities.

I still remember the day, two years ago, when I came to Edmonton. I was on a scholarship from my home in the Middle East and would spend the next two years studying behavioural pediatrics at the University of Alberta.

I had never before travelled from my homeland. But my passion to help develop my country brought me to Edmonton to learn.

I was impressed by the patience, diplomacy and courtesy I was shown by Canadians.

Not everyone who encounters a closed door has the opportunity to enter, but in Canada the doors were open for everyone.

During my time here, I faced difficulties. But they also provided opportunities to learn. I would like to thank everyone for their patience.

I struggled to read other people’s body language and cues. I had difficulty balancing my culture’s social standards with Canadian life. I could not read hazel or blue eyes, as I am used to seeing only black ones. I could not tell when people were expressing genuine feelings or just being polite.

I am thankful to everyone who taught me and to those who challenged me. My experience in Canada has reduced the distance between our countries — the ethics, the cultures and tolerance levels — and I am grateful for that.

My time in Canada with my family brought great moments of privacy and luxury in places we will never forget. The Canadian accent has stuck with my twin boys and will never fade. The training certificate I received in Canada will be part of my portfolio forever.

I call Canada my second home. Canadians have big hearts and open them to others.
