Police are investigating an assault in Beacon Heights that sent a 25-year-old man to hospital with serious head injuries.

A passerby called police after seeing the injured man on 121st Avenue, between 41st and 42nd streets, just before 11 p.m. Thursday.

When police arrived, they found the man slumped on the south side of the avenue suffering from serious head wounds.

The man was originally believed to have been hit by a car, but police say the man was suffering from injuries more consistent with an assault than being struck by a vehicle.

The man was treated at the scene and taken to hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

“At this point in the investigation it’s not clear what happened to this man, so we are looking for more information from the public,” Det. Kurt Martin said.

“We believe there were a number of motorists passing through the area at that time, and we would like to speak to anyone who may have seen anything that didn’t seem right or may have been suspicious.”

Police said they were looking for an older-style dark minivan last seen heading west on 121st Avenue, then northbound on 42nd Street near the area the victim was found.

Detectives want to speak with the van’s occupants to learn if they have any information about the incident.

The van is described as a box-style 1990s Dodge Caravan, possibly dark maroon or green, with damage to the rear passenger side bumper.
