Final call for readers’ 50 Things
Newly revealed panel of judges awaits citizens’ submissions
All right readers, it’s time to panic a little.
There’s only one day left to send in your submissions for the 50 Things that Define Edmonton.
Judging by the volume of some suggestions, a lot of you love your summers. And we’re well aware you share a penchant for the river valley and harbour a hatred for mosquitoes.
But how about you clue us in today on the city’s lesserknown gems and duds? Once the clock strikes midnight on July 10, we’ll be closing the submissions and forwarding them to our esteemed panel of judges.
So far, we’ve kept you out of the loop on this mysterious group of prominent Edmontonians. Well, it’s finally time to draw back the curtain. Here are the courageous locals tasked with picking the top 50 from your sea of submissions: Stephen Mandel: Edmonton’s mayor for the last nineyears; L. Linda Tzang: curator of folk life and ethnocultural communities at the Royal Alberta Museum; Ashif Mawji: local entrepreneur and CEO of NPO Zero Corp, which services charities around the world; Sheldon Elter: local actor and musician who is currently performing in King Lear at the Freewill Shakespeare Festival; Stephanie Coombs: the Journal’s managing editor and architect of the project.
The Journal’s four summer reporters, who have been reading your suggestions all month, will determine the top 100. Our judges will then whittle down the list to the top 50, which the Journal will publish on Aug. 31.
So, Edmonton, is there anything else we’re missing or ideas you’re burning to share? Fire off your suggestions and photos via Twitter and Instagram using the #50thingsyeg hashtag, send an email to 50things@edmontonjournal.com, or join the conversation at our 50 Things That Define Edmonton blog (edmontonjournal.com/50things).
