Camp has unique twist

- LINDSEY WARD

They just don’t make summer camp like they used to. It’s been ages since campy classics like Heavy Weights, Meatballs and the cultish Wet Hot American Summer kept the lakeside debauchery going. Years later, NBC is taking us to Little Otter Family Camp. Cue the cheesy dinner hall songs.

Camp centres around Little Otter owner Mack Granger (Rachel Griffiths), whose husband recently ran off with a Russian hair waxer, leaving her with the cash cow of a camp she might only be able to keep afloat with the help of cocky resort owner Roger Shepard (Rodger Corser). Naturally, the tension between Mack and Roger quickly sparks a heated romance not unlike the hormonally driven summer flings brewing between longtime counsellors Robbie (Tim Pocock) and Sarah (Dena Kaplan) as well as Buzz and the many bikini-clad beauties he’s hoping to get his, um, hands on.

If these plot lines sound all too familiar to you, rest assured there is at least one unique quality about Camp, and it’s that it is shot entirely in Australia with an Australian cast. And yes, it’s an American show. “Shooting an American TV show in Australia is a dream come true for me,” says Griffiths, who’s starred in numerous U.S. series, including Brothers & Sisters and Six Feet Under. (Global — 8 p.m., NBC — 11 p.m.) In The Bridge, a U.S. detective (Diane Lane) and a Mexican detective (Demian Bichir) work together to find the sick individual responsible for raising the body count on both sides of the border. (FX Canada — 8 p.m.) Final bakers Brian Emmett, Darlene Pawlukowsky and Francine Bryson set their timers for the grand finale of The American Baking Competition. (CBS, Global — 10 p.m.) Will the America’s Got Talent auditions ever end? Yes — but not at least until Wednesday’s latest round airs. (NBC, City — 10 p.m.)
