Canadians can dance
So you think you can keep Canadian talent away from the spotlight? Not a chance. Nearly two years after CTV used the cane on So You Think You Can Dance Canada after four seasons, its choreographers are still going strong on the U.S. version.
Now in its 10th season, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (which also airs on CTV) has always been a big cheerleader of Canadian dancers and choreographers, the latter of which appear weekly on the dance competition series. And judges Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe never fail to recognize those from our home and native land.
“Unfortunately So You Think You Can Dance is no longer made in Canada, which is a great shame,” Lythgoe said last week on SYTYCD. “At the same time as saying that I’m really grateful it’s off the air because it gives us those choreographers and Canada’s loss is America’s gain.”
Lythgoe was referring to choreographers like Stacey Tookey — an Edmonton contemporary-dance whiz — as well as hip-hoppers Sean Cheesman from Calgary and Luther Brown from Toronto. SYTYCD further upped its Can-con this season with an appearance by B.C.-bred songstress Carly Rae Jepsen, who played guest-judge during the semifinals. We can expect to see all of the above (sans Jepsen) as SYTYCD moves into the final round this week.
