Two more women join HIV case
CA LGA RY — Two more women have come forward and accused a Calgary man of having unprotected sex with them and not advising them he is HIV positive, bringing his total alleged victims to eight.
Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh said Thursday the latest complainants against John Joseph McNamara are from Lethbridge.
McNamara is facing eight counts of aggravated sexual assault against the women, including four from Calgary and one each from Airdrie and Innisfail.
He is also charged with voyeurism for allegedly taking pictures of one of the Calgary women having a shower at her home without her permission. As well, he faces three counts of breaching bail conditions.
Both new complainants, Walsh said, gave statements to Lethbridge police after reading about the case in the media. Their allegations are between March 2012 and July 2012.
“They were part of relationships, they learned through the media about other complainants and came forward,” Walsh said.
“All of the charges are now consolidated on to one new information so they would be tried together.”
McNamara’s appearance in provincial court on Thursday had been set for continuation of his bail hearing, but defence lawyer Andrea Urquhart was granted an adjournment by Judge John Bascom to review the disclosure of the new charges she had just received from the Crown. McNamara will be back in court on Monday.
One of the complainants against McNamara dates to late 2001. Five of the alleged offences are from last year and the other two are from earlier this year.
