Idol’s best in the past

- Lindsey Ward

There was a time when American Idol couldn’t fail even if they made William Hung and 11 of his clones the Top 12 finalists. But that was then.

It’s no secret the Golden Age of Idol is behind us. It has been since Simon Cowell left at the end of season nine. Since then the judging panel has seen more reinventions than sometime guest mentor Barry Manilow’s mug. As we enter the 13th season, debuting Wednesday, the judges are a hotter topic than the competition. We’re not sure why, since neither Mariah Carey nor Nicki Minaj will be bringing diva drama to the table. Jennifer Lopez returns after a year off, and country hunk Keith Urban will be back. And then we have newcomer, Harry Connick, Jr. How many votes would Connick get if he were judged on his judging? That remains to be seen. (Fox, CTV Two — 9 p.m.)

In season five of Duck Dynasty, debuting tonight, fans will get to know Rebecca Robertson, and rumour has it there’s another new family member about to stir the pot. (A&E — 8 p.m.)

Life goes on for George (Jeremy Sisto) and Tessa (Jane Levy) as the third season of Suburgatory kicks off with quality father-daughter time for the duo. (ABC — 9:30 p.m.)

Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) guest-stars as a mean mom whom Gloria (Sofia Vergara) meets at the high school open house, on a fresh episode of Modern Family. (ABC, City — 10 p.m.)
