Data breach demands action

- Gerry Sinkler, St. Alber t

Health Minister Fred Horne is “outraged” about another screw-up in his department. If we had a major medical advance every time Horne was “outraged” about something, we’d have a cure for cancer.

I’m outraged the personal data of 620,000 people was in the hands of a private company and wasn’t protected by encryption. I’m warned all the time to guard my information, yet our government allows our information to be used with no protection.

For Horne and the privacy commissioner to hide behind provincial privacy legislation, which this government enacted, and tell us their hands are tied, is shameful.

The next provincial election is a long time away, and this fuss will have died down by then. In the meantime, I’ll be watching your investigation to see if anything is done.
