Glee hits high note

- Melissa Hank Postmedia News

On May 19, 2009, Glee debuted with a skip in its step and a song in its heart. That song was Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, and it became the anthem of musically minded social outcasts everywhere.

Though Glee’s ratings are limping and its original cast is largely gone, the show celebrates its 100th episode tonight. The instalment features past and current members of the New Directions glee club.

The episode is pivotal: high school principal Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) finally shut down the glee club after years of finely crafted insults. Next season will be Glee’s final coda. The kids are moving on after Finn’s (Cory Monteith) death, plus the characters played by Jenna Ushkowitz, Darren Criss, Kevin McHale and Chord Overstreet are ready to graduate. Offcamera, some cast members have taken on side projects. Lynch hosts Hollywood Game Night, Riley won last season of Dancing With the Stars, and Lea Michele has released her album Louder.

The show’s legacy, though, will be its willingness to tackle tough subjects like bullying and homo-phobia and celebrate the arts. And that’s as fine a reason as any to believe. (Fox, City — 9 p.m.) ❚ Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe takes viewers on a super-powered trip inside the comic mega-company. (ABC, CTV — 9 p.m.) ❚ In the Pretty Little Liars’ season finale, the girls get more answers about who’s been tormenting them. (M3 — 6 p.m.)
