Album: Fake Tape Artist: Diamond Mind (Independent)

- Sandra Sperounes , Edmonton Journal

Liam Trimble is a tease. The Edmonton musician, with a voice as sweet a nd sentimental as your favourite vacation memories, only seems to release a smattering of songs every few years. In 2011, he offered Ultra Rare EP, a collection of seven tracks. His latest, Fake Tape, his first as the frontman of Diamond Mind, features four experimental-pop tunes (plus two remixes). Dragon Egg crackles with computer-processed squawks, Aidan Lucas-Buckland’s agitated percussion, and drippy guitars to create the soundtrack for an army of loopy moonwalkers. Closed Circuit, fuelled by orchestral strings and elf-like flutes, seems to capture a secret Renaissance Fair in one of the city’s ravines, while Swimsuit Scene feels like an idyllic breeze. “Endless summer, endless bummer / Without a cloud seems like the sky goes on forever,” Trimble sighs over jaggedy guitar rumbles. Unfortunately, Diamond Mind’s debut is more like one of Edmonton’s summers — all too brief. Listen via diamondmindofficial.bandcamp.com.
