GM develops greener engines
General Motors is developing a suite of new Ecotec smalldisplacement engines that it promises will be quieter and more fuel-efficient than similar engines found in its competitors’ cars, the automaker has announced.
The new family of 11 engines will range from a turbocharged 1.0-litre threecylinder to a 1.5L turbo four. Power will range from 75 to 165 horsepower and 70 to 184 pound-feet of torque. The new focus on smaller engines is in response to increasing pressure from buyers and governments worldwide for better fuel economy and fewer emissions without sacrificing performance.
“The new engine family … will make its way into five GM brands and 27 models by the 2017 model year,” said Steve Kiefer, GM vicepresident of global powertrain engineering.
