Manager of Quest honoured

- STEPHEN HUNT

CALGARY — Rose Brow, the managing director of Calgary’s Quest Theatre, was named the winner of a Rozsa Award for Excellence in Arts Management on Thursday in a ceremony at Jack Singer Hall.

Brow, a past winner — for human resources — and an alumnus of the Rozsa Arts Management Program at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business, fulfilled every one of the organizations’ wish lists for their winners, said foundation president Mary Rozsa Thursday in a brief interview prior to the Jack Singer Hall ceremony.

“Where she really stands out,” said Rozsa, “are her HR (human resources) practices.

“Both within the company and the arts sector in general, she supports emerging artists and other administrators.”

Brow received $10,000 and professional development opportunities valued at around $100,000.

“I am humbled to be acknowledged for doing what I love,” said Brow.

“The benefits associated with the Rozsa Award for Excellence in Arts Management are extraordinary and will provide Quest Theatre access to capacity building programs that are instrumental in our future artistic and financial growth,” she continued.

Other nominees included WordFest artistic producer Jo Steffen, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra executive director Melody McKnight, Cantare Children’s Choir founder, artistic director and executive director Catherine Glaser-Climie, Edmonton International street Performer Festival artistic producer Shelley Switzer, and Edmonton’s Northern Light Theatre executive director Elizabeth Ludwig.

Steffen received an award for innovation.

“In terms of increasing community engagement,” said Rozsa, “she has so many things that it’s almost an endless list,” citing a number of WordFest initiatives launched over the past several years.

“Probably her most audacious move,” added Rozsa, “was to open a bookstore in the era of the ebook.”
