Edmonton police have identified the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run last Friday in which a man was killed when he tried to stop a man from stealing his work truck.

Jonathan Jake Cardinal, 31, of no fixed address, is wanted on Canada-wide warrants for manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and theft over $5,000.

The Edmonton Police Service’s homicide section is asking for the public’s help finding Cardinal, who is believed to be in Edmonton.

He should not be approached and is considered “to be a danger to the public as well as himself,” police said in a news release Thursday.

Cardinal is the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run June 13 outside the Parkridge Estates townhouse complex in Edmonton’s Beverly neighbourhood.

Adam Groves, 33, died outside his home when he tried to stop the theft of his work truck.

Groves was a new business owner who had recently started his own company, Bloodhound Line Locating & Consulting.

When his work truck, idling in the laneway of the townhouse complex, was stolen, Groves tried to drape himself over the back end of the vehicle.

He ended up underneath the vehicle and was run over.

His blue Dodge Ram that was stolen was found downtown Friday evening.

On Monday, Groves’ sisterin-law Desiré Poulin pleaded for the suspect to “do the right thing” and turn himself in.

“We’re hurting. We need justice for Adam,” Poulin said.

Groves had a wife, Jolene; a four-year-old daughter, Harmony; and seven-yearold son, Harley.

“He did what he thought was right,” Poulin said.

“His livelihood was a big part of providing for his family.”

Cardinal is described as an aboriginal man, about five-foot-10, weighing 180 pounds, with a medium build and medium length brown/ black hair.

Anyone with information about Cardinal’s whereabouts is asked to contact police at 780-423-4567, Crime Stoppers, or #377 from a mobile phone.
