Local licks

- Sandra Sperounes

Two new TV/web series are focusing their cameras on our city’s music scene.

Edmonton Unplugged, a new show on Shaw TV, hosted by Douglas Mitchell, features acoustic performances by local musicians.

Singer-songwriter Carrie Day and Rend, a rock act who recently received a $50,000 Rawlco Radio grant, are the stars of the first episode, now available on YouTube.com/ShawTV.

Each episode will air daily on TV for two weeks — at 2 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. — before moving online. Future artists include Juno nominee Chloe Albert and bluesrockers The Gibson Block.

The latter will also appear on another series, Secret Setlist, which will profile Edmonton musicians for Telus Optik.

The show, which will debut sometime in 2014, was shot at Avenue Theatre in April.

The 118th Avenue room quietly closed its doors on June 14.

Its owners decided to sell the land and building, which opened in the 1950s, to developers.

Unplugged and Secret Setlist follow in the footsteps on Livestock, a monthly YouTube series featuring Alberta musicians, including Edmonton’s Unwed Mothers and Joe Nolan.
