Undrafted players since 2000 who’ve established NHL careers

For all the time and effort that goes into scouting, players will still be overlooked, players who could go on to carve out noteworthy NHL careers.

Hall of Famers Ed Belfour, Peter Stastny and Dino Ciccarelli went undrafted, as did Martin St. Louis, who won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player as well as two scoring titles.

Here’s some free agents who have been signed since 2000: Niklas Backstrom: signed by Wild in 2006; still with Minnesota. Rene Bourque: signed by Chicago Blackhawks in 2004; spent the last two seasons with Montreal Canadiens. Alexander Burrows: signed by Vancouver in 2005; still with the Canucks. Pasqual Dupuis: signed by Minnesota in 2000; has been with Pittsburgh Penguins since 2008. Ruslan Fedotenko: signed by Philadelphia Flyers in 2000; spent last season in the Kontinental Hockey League. Dan Girardi: signed by New York in 2006; still with the Rangers. Jonas Hiller: signed by Anaheim in 2007; still with Ducks. Chris Kunitz: signed by Anaheim in 2003; traded to Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009. Curtis Glencross: signed by Anaheim in 2004; has been with Calgary Flames since 2008. Josh Gorges: signed by San Jose Sharks in 2002; flipped to Montreal in 2007, then extended through 2017-18 season.
