GAMES THIS WEEK
WINNIPEG (2-0) at MONTREAL (1-1)
Friday, 5 p.m., TSN
Keys to the game: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have to find a way to neutralize the Montreal Alouettes’ John Bowman, who had four sacks Friday in a 24-9 victory over the B.C. Lions. Montreal, with former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith behind centre, needs to get its passing game back on track.
Players to watch: The Bombers’ Nic Grigsby has been a find at tailback. He has rushed for 183 yards over two games, scoring his first three CFL touchdowns in Thursday’s 36-28 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks. The Alouettes’ S.J. Green is noted for his spectacular catches.
OTTAWA (0-1) at EDMONTON (2-0)
Friday, 8 p.m., TSN
Keys to the game: The Redblacks need some consistency from their offence. Ottawa scored a touchdown on each of its first three drives on Thursday, assuming a 21-7 lead, but the Blue Bombers clawed back. The Edmonton Eskimos are looking for their Chris Jones-influenced defence to continue to create turnovers.
Players to watch: Eskimos linebacker Dexter McCoil — a rangy 6-foot-4, 222-pounder — has one interception in each of his first two CFL games. Tailback Chevon Walker has two of the Redblacks’ first three touchdowns.
CALGARY (1-0) at TORONTO (1-1)
Saturday, 4:30 p.m., TSN
Keys to the game: The Calgary Stampeders need a healthy Jon Cornish, who absorbed a clothesline to the head in Week 1 during a 29-8 victory over Montreal. He did not practise Monday. Calgary must also find a way to neutralize Chad Owens, who caught 11 passes for 159 yards and one TD in Saturday’s 48-15 victory over the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders. Owens (2012) and Cornish (2013) are the past two winners of the CFL’s most-outstanding-player award.
Players to watch: There is a pronounced contrast in the quarterbacks’ experience level. Toronto boasts future Hall of Famer Ricky Ray, while Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell is making his fifth CFL start.
B.C. (0-2) at SASKATCHEWAN (1-1)
Saturday, 7:30 p.m., TSN
Keys to the game: The B.C. Lions need a much sharper performance from Kevin Glenn, who has thrown six interceptions — only one fewer than he served up all of last season while with Calgary. The Roughriders must get back to playing ball-control football after the lopsided loss in Toronto on Saturday.
Players to watch: The Lions need to get the elusive Stefan Logan involved in the offence. Saskatchewan will look to exploit a porous B.C. offensive line, which means that defensive end John Chick could enjoy a field day. Chick has three sacks after two games this season.
