Unsafe rigs cruise province’s roads
Auditor general Merwan Saher slammed the province for its continuing failure to get dangerous trucks off Alberta roads, calling the situation “very disturbing.”
He said the government isn’t taking disciplinary and enforcement action against trucks and carriers who are not complying with safety rules; in one-third of highrisk cases, there is no timely followup at all.
“Simply, the department is not following its own processes,” Saher said, adding the failure has nothing to do with funding, and following up wouldn’t be costly at all.
The Transportation Ministry told Saher the reason for the continuing failure is that staff keep the followup dates in their personal calendars, which are not shared.
