Paid my share of school taxes

-

Re: “Taxed and billed to excess,” Letters, A. Mohler, July 3, and “Speak up to city council,” Letters, Cindy Husband, July 4 There was a day when seniors were excused from having to pay the school-board portion of taxes — based not on income, but on age — and it’s high time that practice was reinstated.

I have paid school taxes for 40 years. I’m now 65, and by my math that accounts for two generations of students: mine and my grandkids. If I haven’t paid my share by now, then the only conclusion is that those who are managing the purse strings are doing an extremely poor job. While merely going back to the trough for more tax dollars has become the norm because it’s the easy solution, it can’t be sustained.

It’s time our civic, provincial and school board leaders understood their role as stewards of our tax dollars.

Baby boomers may be in just the mood to start pushing back, so I suggest it’s time we’re listened to.
