Missing couple’s son tells family to have faith
The disappearance of fiveyear-old Nathan O’Brien and his grandparents Alvin and Kathy Liknes has captured the attention of Bret McCann, whose parents have been missing since July 2010.
“It does sort of re new memories of four years ago,” McCann said. “It’s very sad; I’m very hopeful that this turns out well.”
Lyle and Marie McCann were last seen getting gas in St. Albert, and their motorhome was found two days later at the Minnow Lake campground near Edson. Their bodies have not been found.
“Things are different but similar,” McCann said.
Travis Vader was charged with two counts of firstdegree murder for the disappearance of the couple, but the charges have been stayed.
McCann has been following the story out of Calgary every day.
“It is a terrible thing and I really feel badly for those people,” McCann said.
He said that the support of the community is critical. When his parents disappeared, the family held a candlelight vigil in front of the St. Albert city hall and set up a Facebook group that thousands of people joined.
“It seemed like everybody was trying to help us,” he recalled.
Though there was a lot of grief as well, McCann said the support of the community is heartwarming. In cases of missing family, he said, plenty of people are able to put themselves in the shoes of the family.
“There’s no manual on what to do,” McCann said. “This feeling of love and support from the community was critical.”
The $60,000 reward for information that leads to the McCann parents being found is still in place and anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
