Injuries dog Montreal Alouettes

- HERB ZURKOWSKY

MONTREAL —They’re coming off a game in which they were penalized 18 times for 180 yards. And they’re about to travel to B.C. Place, a stadium in which they last won in August 2000.

Their starting quarterback was conspicuously absent as practice began on Tuesday. They’re likely to be missing their starting right offensive tackle this week, an eight-year CFL veteran. His replacement would be making his first pro start.

And they’ve repatriated a veteran non-import fullback to go with everyone else they brought back this season.

Quarterback Troy Smith, already nursing a wonky left knee that requires some tender love, ice and sporadic rehabilitation, missed the start of Tuesday’s practice. But it was all a false alarm. Smith injured the thumb on his left hand during last Friday’s loss to Winnipeg and spent the morning having an MRI and X-rays which proved negative. When he returned to the workout, he donned his helmet and practised with the starting offence, an offence missing slotback S.J. Green, nursing sore ribs. And backup running-back Steven Lumbala, who has a concussion but might play this weekend.

Offensive tackle Jeff Perrett suffered a high ankle sprain in the second quarter of the one-point loss to the Blue Bombers.

As well, the Als still are missing receiver Duron Carter, with a sprained ankle.
