Lots of ways to spend $50M: poll
Most people who win the lottery choose to buy a new house, a new car and travel the world. Work becomes a thing of the past and education funds are set up for generations to come. Personally, I would take in a football game at any NFL stadium and not hold back on the nachos and beer.
However, Edmonton lottery winners Andrea and Bill Groner, who received a Lotto Max cheque for $50 million on Tuesday, only plan to go on their honeymoon before returning to their everyday lives.
An unscientific Journal online poll asked what readers would do if they won $50 million. Some responses were extravagant, others practical.
They ranged from buying a gold statue of themselves (a confident if not slightly conceited response), to building a dream home in the bush and acquiring “every redneck toy known to man.”
One individual cleverly suggested that he or she would “buy a job,” an action that would certainly be attainable with $50 million.
Many financially savvy individuals deemed it best to invest the majority of the money and spend a little on family and friends, but others had different ideas.
“Keep all, give no one a dime,” was one coldhearted response. Another, more vengeful reply noted that charities would receive a portion of the money instead of friends because no help was received during a recent move.
The most popular response was to quit work, travel and play Santa: an option chosen by more than 60 per cent of the 1,762 respondents.
Whatever the Groners choose to do will be right for them. Deciding how to spend $50 million could be the hardest decision they’ll face in the coming years.
