Superhero cred keeps growing

Scarlett Johansson shows she’s not for backing down on screen

- BOB THOMPSON

Scarlett Johansson might be pausing to have a baby, but she’s left us with some bigscreen fantasy reminders. The 29-year-old recently wrapped her Black Widow role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, set for theatres next spring.

For an immediate red-hot Scarlett hit, there is her starring role in Luc Besson’s Lucy, which opens Friday.

In the action thriller, Johansson plays the title character, a reluctant drug mule who inadvertently has an experimental drug seep into her system. The formula gives her brain superhuman power, which in turn allows her to seek revenge on the bad guys who put her in the condition she’s suffering through.

Not many figured the actress for a super-vixen action hero, but thanks to Marvel’s Black Widow, she’s in the conversation. With that in mind, let’s review her superhero background: 1. Lucy: Driven by a mind-expanding drug, she thinks beyond the mediocre. She’s able to disarm baddies with brain waves, speaks multiple languages and wears disguising wigs with style.

Her fashion choices tend to be modestly second debut, yet she runs amok with the best of cinemas’ avengers.

Lucy’s film future is up in the air, but Johansson is a fan.

“There’s a warm spot in my heart for a woman who means business,” she told reporters during a news conference promoting Captain America: The Winter Soldier. 2. Natasha Romanoff/Black

Widow: The wily agent reveals herself with an impressive “leathered-up” fight sequence in Iron Man 2. She goes on to steal scenes in The Avengers and Captain America sequel, and apparently she has some moments in the next Avengers. Fans continue to clamour for a Black Widow stand-alone movie.

Chances are Marvel will make it so.

“She’s kind of evolving with each instalment,” said Johansson, who continues to be coy about a Black Widow flick. 3. Silken Floss: OK, so Frank Miller’s 2008 cinema version of the graphic comic book series The Spirit didn’t quite make the grade. But few complained about Johansson’s sassy secretary who refuses to kowtow to her villainous boss, Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson). Silken smoulders thanks to Johansson, who seems to be comfortable as a femme fatale.

“I do love noir films,” she said just before The Spirit’s theatrical release. “I could be a film nerd and list them all.”
