WINDSOR, ONT. — A Windsor man was shot at the Ambassador Bridge Sunday morning after allegedly pointing a handgun at border officers.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said that around 3 a.m. a man heading toward the U.S. side of the bridge stopped his car before the inspection booth, got out and waved his weapon while approaching primary inspection lanes.

U.S. border officers ordered the man to drop his weapon.

“After pointing the weapon in the direction of the officers, CBP officers fired upon the individual,” said chief CBP officer of public affairs Ken Hammond.

The man was taken to hospital, treated and released in police custody on the U.S. side of the border. The U.S. border agency say he has previous history with Canadian law enforcement.

Windsor police had a run-in with the man shortly before he was at the bridge. Police said around 2:40 a.m. patrol officers arrived at a parking lot where a man got out of a black Ford Explorer with a firearm in his hand. The man started walking toward a McDonald’s restaurant and the officers shouted at him drop his weapon.

The suspect turned, pointed his gun toward the officers. He reportedly said to the police, “Why haven’t you shot me yet?”

As the police tried to calm him, the man got into his truck and drove over the curb and sidewalk to get away before the officers could get back into their vehicle.

“Our people are waiting to hear from the border officials, their reports and everything else,” said Windsor police spokesman Sgt. Matt D’Asti. “And we’ll definitely be having more to say about it (Monday).”
