A daylight sexual assault and robbery of a female jogger in northwest Edmonton has police on the hunt for a male suspect.

Police said the 37-year-old woman was attacked from behind and dragged into an alley around 6:30 p.m. Saturday as she was running in the area of 116th Avenue and 102nd Street — just south of the NAIT campus.

The attacker took out a box cutter and green painter’s tape, which he used to tie up the woman. He then demanded money and assaulted her, after which the victim escaped and called 911.

“This was a very violent attack ... This was pretty brazen happening in daytime hours,” said Det. Brenda Dalziel of the Edmonton Police Service’s sexual assault section.

Dalziel would not reveal whether the woman was physically injured, but said she was “doing fine considering what happened.”

Police released a composite drawing of the suspect, who is described as aboriginal, about six feet tall, 160 pounds, 25 to 30 years old, with dark, spiky hair. He was wearing a black track suit with a white stripe.

Investigators are looking into a similar incident that occurred in the same area last month. In that case, a woman was walking through a lot near 118th Avenue and 102nd Street at about 8 p.m. on March 4 when a man assaulted her. Police on Monday released a video of that suspect captured by the security cameras of a nearby business.

Anyone who has information about either incident is asked to contact police at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
