2.1% tax hike approved

The average Edmonton homeowner will pay an extra $63 in property taxes after city councillors approved the final 2015 budget Tuesday.

The typical house, worth $401,000, faces a total tax bill of approximately $3,100 this year, made up of civic and provincial school levies.

The 2.1 per cent overall increase is one of the lowest in the last two decades.

The city approved a 5.7 per cent tax rise last December. However, the school levy actually dropped.

Councillors decided against boosting the municipal portion of the tax bill, as they have in the past, to give local residents a break as the economy slows.

Tax bills will be mailed out May 22.
