Prayer suspended

Councillors followed the advice of its lawyers Tuesday and suspended the long-standing practice of opening meetings with a prayer.

The change was recommended in light of a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision that opening and closing council meetings in Saguenay, Que., with a Catholic prayer violated human rights legislation.

Councillors instead began their meeting with a moment of silent contemplation.
