Liberals pledge arts funding

Interim Alberta Liberal leader David Swann says his party will spur economic growth by investing millions in the province’s arts scene.

The Liberals would increase funding for the arts by more than $30 million, Swann announced Wednesday in Red Deer.

Swann pledged to double funding for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, from $26.5 million to $53 million.

The party will also invest $5 million to support First Nations art.

“Even in these uncertain economic times, support for the Alberta creative community must continue,” Swann said in a written statement. “For every dollar invested in the arts, an estimated $12 of economic activity is created.”

He said his political opponents have ignored the arts while the Liberals have embraced them.
