Staff members nominated

-

Two Edmonton Journal staff members were nominated Thursday for Canadian Association of Journalists awards.

Reporter Keith Gerein was recognized for his Condition Critical series on the state of Alberta’s hospitals and the $1 billion of deferred maintenance. It was a five-day series sparked by ongoing maintenance challenges at the Misericordia Hospital and Gerein’s own experience visiting his grandmother in Calgary’s Foothills Hospital. He digitized and analyzed binders full of maintenance data on all of Alberta’s hospitals and let people research their own hospitals with an online database.

The series ran in December and is still available at edmontonjournal.com/ conditioncritical.

Photographer Larry Wong was recognized for a portfolio of 20 photos. “Larry’s nomination represents a body of work over an entire year, which is a testament to his ability to consistently file strong, compelling photos no matter his assignment,” Journal managing editor Stephanie Coombs said.

“I’m so pleased for Keith and Larry as these nominations represent months of dedication and hard work. Keith doggedly pursued politicians, policy-makers and health-care professionals to come to some hard conclusions about how the province needs to move forward with its aging hospital system. It’s work that wouldn’t have been done without his diligence and persistence.”

Winners will be announced in June. There were 235 entries for the 2014 program.
