Death of man, 64, treated as suspicious

- OTIENA ELLWAND

John Larsen was home with his wife Thursday night when he heard someone across the street yell for help.

He ran outside and through the blossoming hedges lining his neighbour’s property, he saw one man cradling another. One man was lying on the ground, bleeding from his mouth. It looked like he had cracked his skull on the sidewalk, Larsen said.

The other man held him, saying “‘Please don’t leave me,’ ” Larsen said.

“The guy was really shook up. He was just hysterical.”

Another neighbour had already called 911.

“You want to help, but there’s nothing you can do at that point,” Larsen said.

Paramedics arrived soon after and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, he said.

Edmonton homicide investigators are treating the death of the 64-year-old man as suspicious.

Just after 9 p.m., police were called by paramedics to the home on 90th Street north of 119th Avenue, where they had treated an “injured man,” police said in a written statement.

The man was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

On Friday afternoon, a large blood stain could be seen on the cement path at the foot of the bungalow’s front steps. Latex hospital gloves from the emergency workers lay on the grass.

The front door of the taupe bungalow had been left open, showing several silver cans on a table inside. The top glass portion of the screen door was broken.

Neighbours speculated the death was an accident, that the man somehow tumbled down the stairs and cracked his head on the cement.

Police are interviewing people who live at the home. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday afternoon. oellwand@edmontonjournal.com Twitter.com/otiena
