Album: I Am Your Man Artist: Daniel Wesley (Beachgrove Records)

- Francois Marchand, Postmedia News

In an age where a band like Toronto’s Magic! can rake in a No. 1 hit and garner a bunch of awards for its insipid brand of reggae-pop (with a song, Rude, that features one of the worst guitar solos ever put to tape), you start to wonder if there will ever be any justice for Daniel Wesley.

The B.C.-bred roots-rocker has consistently delivered quality sun-splashed material since he broke onto the scene in the mid-2000s, and his seventh album I Am Your Man ranks easily as one of his best releases. Still, Wesley remains somewhat under-appreciated beyond Western Canada — something that, with a little luck, will change with this latest offering.

Containing a variety of Caribbean-inflected tunes (Come At Me, the flip-flop-worthy Shake, dub-splashed Rub), I Am Your Man is unpretentious, tightly crafted, and just a gust of fresh air.

Backed by an expert crew featuring his longtime rhythm section of drummer Tim Proznick and bassist Darren Parris, with saxophonist Alex Maher and keyboardist/guitarist Mike Kenney in tow, Wesley is in his element, whether he’s delivering an ’80s-inspired love song (Beautiful), a jaunty Van Morrison-esque tambourine-driven tune (I Am Your Man), or a jazzy instrumental that will get your booty shaking (Funky Jam). The first release on Wesley’s own label Beachgrove Records, I Am Your Man is a little bit of everything that makes summer on the West Coast a blast. So stick that one in your cooler for the months ahead.

Wesley will perform Saturday, July 4 at the Seven Music Festival in St. Albert. Tickets available via sevenmusicfest.com.
