Redblacks going for hometown talent

- Muray McCormick

The 2015 CFL draft kicks off Tuesday at 6 p.m. with live coverage of the first two rounds on TSN2.

The remaining five rounds are to be streamed live on tsn. ca.

Here’s how the first round is likely to play out:

1. Ottawa Redblacks — Alex Mateas (6-foot-3, 303 pounds), centre, Connecticut: The Redblacks bolster their offensive line with Mateas, the top-rated prospect after DE Christian Covington and OL Brett Boyko.

Covington was selected in the sixth round in this year’s NFL draft by the Houston Texans.

Boyko, a Saskatoon product, signed as a free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mateas, an Ottawa native, is capable of playing this season.

2. Winnipeg Blue Bombers — Danny Groulx (6-6, 325), offensive tackle, Laval, Que.: Groulx is also ready to play and can step in as a right tackle.

3. Toronto Argonauts — Sukh Chungh (6-4, 303), guard, Calgary: Chungh plays with an edge. He’s also capable of starting this season.

4. Montreal Alouettes — Jacob Ruby (6-7, 315), offensive tackle, Richmond, Va.: Ruby can play left tackle and would be a solid backup to veteran Jeff Parrett. 5. B.C. Lions — Sean McEwen (6-3, 297), centre, Calgary: The Lions take a chance on McEwen even though he reportedly told CFL teams that he plans to return to university in 2016 to complete his studies.

6. Saskatchewan Roughriders — Nic Demski (6-0, 215), wide receiver, Manitoba: With the top-tier offensive linemen off the board, the Riders select one of the best receivers in the draft. It’s a toss-up between Demski and Simon Fraser’s Lemar Durant. Demski is more polished than Durant and can also contribute on special teams.

7. Edmonton Eskimos — Lemar Durant (6-2, 231), wide receiver, Simon Fraser, B.C.: The Eskimos go for Durant, who boasts the combination of speed and size.

Durant was second among receivers in the 40-yard sprint in 4.56 seconds at the CFL’s annual combine to Demski’s 4.55.

8. Hamilton Tiger-Cats — Brett Boyko (6-7, 290), offensive tackle, UNLV: The Ticats take a chance on Boyko, who would be selected earlier if he wasn’t under contract to the Philadelphia Eagles.

9. Calgary Stampeders — Chris Ackie (6-0, 215), defensive back, Wilfrid Laurier, Waterloo, Ont: The Stampeders select Ackie, who was the top defensive prospect at the CFL’s combine, adding to their depth on special teams.
