Game of Thrones
Season 5 of this stirring adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy draws to a close with Mother’s Mercy, which sees Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) marching out to embrace his destiny for good or ill. Elsewhere, at a time when she is feeling particularly vulnerable, Dany (Emilia Clarke) finds herself surrounded by strangers. As Cersei (Lena Headey) seeks forgiveness, Jon (Kit Harington) faces an immense challenge. (HBO Canada)
Veep
She gained the Oval Office when her predecessor resigned, but can Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) win re-election on her own merits? That’s the question on everyone’s mind as she and her worried staff assemble to watch as each state result is called in the season finale, Election Night. Selina’s real-life alter ego, Louis-Dreyfus, doesn’t have to worry about job security, though. HBO has elected to renew Veep for a fifth season. (HBO Canada)
Halt and Catch Fire
In a new episode called The Way In, John Bosworth (Toby Huss) tries to find some way to reconnect with his former life, while Gordon and Donna Clark (Scoot McNairy, Kerry Bishe) receive a surprising invitation. Meanwhile, a problem arises at Mutiny that threatens its survival. (AMC)
Penny Dreadful
Fearful for their safety in London, Vanessa and Ethan (Eva Green, Josh Hartnett) flee to what used to be the Cutwife’s cottage on the desolate moors. There, the two of them grow closer, but any intimacy is cut short as a figure from her dark past resurfaces, in the new episode Little Scorpion. Back in the city, Lyle and Victor (Simon Russell Beale, Harry Treadaway) glean even more disturbing information from the Verbis Diablo relics. (The Movie Network, Movie Central)
Defiance
Following the events of the Season 2 cliffhanger finale, Season 3 opens on the eve of an impending military siege of the town, which has fallen on hard times following the collapse of its lucrative mines. The sci-fi series, starring Grant Bowler and Julie Benz, is set in what was St. Louis three decades after a mixed alien race throws the world into chaos. Their fate uncertain, the townspeople face a further threat with the arrival of the mysterious and nearly extinct Omec, in the two-hour première the World We Seize. (Showcase)
