SHOWCASE SET TO INSPIRE

Eight design teams will face off

- LEANNE BROWNOFF

Expect the unexpected. That’s the growing buzz meandering through the local interior design industry, as MoJo Design Inc. prepares to unveil its third annual design event: Vignettes 3 Showcase.

Taking place on Oct. 8, Vignettes 3 Showcase is a local design competition that allows the public to view innovative designs and mingle with the experts. Although the design business is typically noted as being highly competitive, the Vignettes 3 Showcase promotes camaraderie. This year, MoJo has organized eight design teams to compete in a creative sparring match, with the winning team to be decided by a panel of judges.

“We have invited local designers, craftsmen, visual artists and suppliers to create design spaces or ‘vignettes’ that will inspire the public and their fellow competitors,” explains Maureen Wright, co-owner and the ‘Mo’ in MoJo.

Frequently connected with Dinner TV (formerly Breakfast Television), the Canadian Progress Club and the Children’s Wish Foundation, the name MoJo still inspires curiosity. In addition to the competition, the event will also include a silent auction, with all proceeds going to the local charity Uncles and Aunts at Large.

“We are that little one-stop-shop, innovative design firm,” explains Johanne Lewis, co-owner and the ‘Jo’ part of MoJo. “And we take great pride in thinking outside the box.”

Interior design is a passion for Wright and Lewis, and they want to see the Edmonton design industry thrive. Attending major design shows in New York sparked the idea of hosting an event for the Edmonton scene, spotlighting local talent.

“There are so many amazing craftsmen and designers here in Edmonton,” explains Leigh Wright, marketing manager. “Vignettes 3 Showcase allows us to unify and promote the design community as a whole.”

Gordon T. Johnston, graphic designer at All On iPad, is anticipating the event.

“There is no other collaboratively, spirited event like this.” Johnston says. “It ignites our creative talents, allowing us to showcase what we do best — celebrate the fine art of living.”
