Get out and cast your vote Oct. 19
In just under a week, we head to the polls for “political roulette.” There are a few things I’m sure most Canadians would like to see:
Elected candidates responsible and directly accountable to their constituents, not the political party. If you want to be a parrot, go find a pirate.
Total transparency and accountability of all government departments to taxpayers. Citizen access to “the books” is required.
Any and all political appointments are for a renewable five-year term. Each appointee’s performance should be independently evaluated annually; should they fail that review, the appointment ceases or is not renewed.
Only elected MPs may abolish, amend or approve laws, but an appointed official or group may suggest that an Act of Parliament be revised or removed.
Appointed or elected officials are not immune from laws and regulations. Hold them accountable.
It’s highly unlikely any party would implement such revolutionary and democratic actions. But nothing will change unless we make the effort to … get out and vote! Gary Schofield, Sherwood Park
