A case of reality versus perception
Re: “Truly protect rights of students, staff,” Letters, Patricia Grell, Oct. 9
Your quote from Fr. Rosica is a good one to ponder and pray about: “There must be an end to exclusionary language and a strong emphasis on embracing reality as it is.”
In the case of transgender persons, the reality is that they were born either male or female, and they have the outward appearance of what God intended them to be. It’s the perception of that reality held by the individual — perhaps stoked by their parents, in some cases — which is in error. So yes, I agree with Rosica’s advice to place a strong emphasis on embracing reality as it is.
I do not believe that God makes mistakes. However, the University of Toronto has recently admitted its mistake and is altering its policy on gender-neutral bathrooms after two peeping incidents within the last month.
A friend who’s a retired teacher has this solution: Let the transgender person use the staff washroom, which normally has a one-personat-a-time capacity. Fred Holtslag, St. Albert
