MOB KILLS MAYOR IN WAKE OF ATTACK ON POLITICAL RIVAL

-

GUATEMALA CITY A mob has killed a village mayor in western Guatemala in reprisal for an attack on a political rival that resulted in the death of two teenage girls, authorities say.

A prosecutors office on Monday confirmed the death of 43-year-old Bacilio Juracan, mayor of Concepcion. The town lies about 180 kilometres west of Guatemala City.

Villagers blamed Juracan for an attack Sunday on former mayoral candidate Lorenzo Sequen. Sequen was riding in a pickup with his family when several armed men opened fire, killing Sequen’s daughter and niece, both 17.

Hours later, hundreds of people surrounded city hall and a home where the recently re-elected mayor had sought refuge, and burned him to death.
