Edmonton Journal

A note to Journal readers

- Gerry Nott, Senior Vice President, Editorial Postmedia

On Tuesday, we combined the newsrooms of the Edmonton Journal and the Edmonton Sun into one common newsgathering operation, while saying goodbye to many valued journalists.

Many of those who have left are people whose bylines are familiar to regular Journal or Sun readers, but whether or not you knew their names, they all worked to give their newspaper the character and identity that their readers cherish. While it was a sad day for all of us here, we also realize that it is a difficult time for many readers as well.

Postmedia, like others in our industry — the Toronto Star, and Bell Media most recently — has been forced to consider new ways of doing business in the face of dramatically shifting media consumption habits.

We’re confident that with a combined newsroom, we will be able to deliver to readers of the Journal and Sun in Edmonton a package that respects the distinct characteristics and values of the papers they care about.

The slightly more serious-minded Journal will retain its focus on Edmonton’s local and provincial news, arts and business, while the street-level view of the city, served up with a bit of sass and a healthy sports package, will remain at the core of the Sun.

Local voices, those columnists who engage or enrage you will remain distinct to each of the titles. And the voices of the papers themselves will remain strong and separate.

We have the largest local reporting team in the city, and as one, our newsroom will continue to provide the journalism you expect, on the platform you desire.
