Whitney Cummings: I’m Your Girlfriend
From the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, Calif., actress, comic and writer Whitney Cummings holds forth on a typically unfiltered series of observations about some of the paradoxes that continue to prevail in many relationships, even at a time when women have more power and independence than ever. This one-hour special marks her first standup gig for HBO. (HBO Canada)
BLACK SAILS
Season 3 of the Emmy Awardwinning Starz original series, which takes place 20 years prior to the Robert Louis Stevenson classic Treasure Island, opens in the wake of the destruction of Charles Town, where the world lives in fear of Captain Flint (Toby Stephens). When his campaign of terror crosses over into madness, it falls to John Silver (Luke Arnold) to locate the man within the monster. Ray Stevenson (Rome) joins the cast as the iconic pirate Blackbeard, and Luke Roberts (Wolf Hall) plays the historic figure Woodes Rogers. (Super Channel)
GUY’S GROCERY GAMES
As another new tournament round gets underway with four more chefs previously featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, the kitchen wizards are tasked with making a hot sandwich without shopping in the meat, cheese and deli aisles. After that, they’re challenged to roll the dice to determine what they will use to create an international dish. In the final round, they make a pork dish with ingredients picked out of the claw machine. (Food Network)
MOVIE: THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
In the 2015 followup to that rare senior-driven blockbuster The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Richard Gere joins returnees Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel as plans are initiated for a second such resort. Sonny (Patel) keeps running into roadblocks, some of them involving his own wedding plans, so he seeks help from some familiar characters. Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup are also back in the cast, and director John Madden and writer Ol Parker reprise their jobs from the first picture. (The Movie Network/Movie Central)
MOVIE: WE BOUGHT A ZOO
Known for such films as Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, director Cameron Crowe alters his cinematic course with this affecting, true 2011 tale of a widowed writer (Matt Damon) who buys a house that has an animal park attached to it. Scarlett Johansson plays the creatures’ caretaker, and her work and Damon’s do much to elevate this above the typical “feel-good” movie that might be expected. Based on the book by Benjamin Mee. ALL CREATURES BIG AND SMALL
Very small kids are presumably the target audience of this 2015 CGI-animated family comedy loosely based on the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. While boarding the vessel to escape the flood, two new animal friends (voices of Callum Maloney and Ava Connolly) fall off the ark, forcing them to team up to survive the elements and predators. NCIS: LOS ANGELES
The potential threat faced by a celebrated fashion model concerns the team in this repeat of an episode that aired in the fall, Driving Miss Diaz. The woman may be a survivor of a mass killing in Peru two decades earlier — and she might be a target again, prompting protective measures such as Kensi (Daniela Ruah) posing as her assistant and Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) becoming her chauffeur.
