Clutch hiccups lead to recall of Fiat 500s

- NICK TRAGIANIS

Fiat Chrysler has issued another recall affecting the Fiat 500 subcompact.

In North America, more than 80,000 Fiat 500s from the 2012 to 2016 model years are affected. FCA found on 500s with the five-speed manual transmission, clutch travel might exceed original design specs.

This could eventually lead to clutch damage and ultimately result in restricted shifts or cars not moving altogether. The fix calls for an upgraded clutch release system, including a travel limiter and a new switch for the clutch pedal.

Of the 500s affected, about 7,800 are in Canada. The 500s with turbocharged engines aren’t included in the recall and the 500X and 500L are also not affected.
