Girl struck by truck driven by father remains critical

- DAMIEN WOOD

CALGARY Police say it was a sevenyear-old girl’s father behind the wheel of a truck that backed over her in Tuscany Thursday afternoon, causing critical injuries.

The girl was rushed to Alberta Children’s Hospital, where she remains. Her condition was considered life-threatening when she arrived and police say she hasn’t improved.

She suffered serious head trauma when the vehicle knocked her down.

The incident happened in the 200 block of Tuscany Glen Park N.W. shortly before 5 p.m. Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey said it looked as if the girl thought she was safe enough to cross the street to play with her friends.

“He wasn’t able to see her behind the truck. He backed out of the driveway and (his daughter) happened to be there. This was about as tragic as it could possibly be.”

Investigation into the incident remains ongoing, though police say speed and alcohol have already been ruled out as possible factors.

The family has been cooperative with the investigation. No charges are anticipated. “There’s nothing to be gained by any charges on this one,” Stacey said.

The little girl’s family is “devastated” by what’s happened. “We’re doing what we can with victim services, trying to help the family.”
