The Eighties
There are a couple of interesting episode repeats tonight from the most recent documentary in the news channel’s explorations of the decades. First up is the opener of the 1980s series, Raised on Television, which looks at how the VCR and remote control changed the way viewers watched TV. It’s followed by Video Killed the Radio Star as music videos and the digital revolution dominated the music industry with CDs replacing vinyl and charts headlined by the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and the late, lamented Prince. PRIVATE EYES
If you missed the premiere of this new series which harks back to the heyday of the TV private eye, you can catch a repeat tonight. It stars Jason Priestley (Raising Expectations) as former pro hockey great turned private investigator, Matt Shade, who sees this new career path, which teams him with tough boss Angie Everett (Cindy Sampson, Supernatural) as a path to redemption from a checkered personal past. In the premiere, The Code, Matt and Angie investigate the case of a pro hockey player who suffers a heart attack on the ice. (Global)
DATELINE ON TLC
In the first episode of tonight’s new back-to-back programs, investigators get a DNA hit on a bizarre murder case that has gone cold. The trouble is finding a link between the victim and her suspected killer who are separated by some 2,500 kilometres, in an episode titled Indiscretion. And after the murder of a wealthy socialite, in The Evil to Come, the police zero in on a suspect but solving the crime looks like a lengthy process. (TLC)
MADOFF
A name synonymous with investment fraud is the title of this 2016 drama which repeats its first half tonight, with the second half slated for next Saturday. Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss stars as Bernie Madoff in the drama, a collaboration between ABC’s entertainment division and its news department, via the latter’s Lincoln Square Productions. To that end, a book about Madoff by ABC investigative reporter Brian Ross was a prime source for the teleplay here. (ABC)
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
As suggested by the writing-producing involvement of genre icon Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), there’s a bit more to this horror tale than it might first seem, though it lures teens to the title cabin where terror awaits them. What they don’t know is their reactions are being watched by observers played by Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing). (Space)
PRIDE & PREJUDICE
This 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel of 19th-century sisters and their romances benefits from an excellent, age-appropriate cast. Keira Knightley shines as the sibling who has mixed feelings about the friend (Matthew Macfadyen) of a wealthy man (Simon Woods) who has eyes for her sister (Rosamund Pike). Donald Sutherland, Judi Dench, Brenda Blethyn and Jena Malone also are also part of this solid lineup of actors. (W)
MOVIE: THE INTERN
Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway make an engaging duo in this 2015 comedy from director Nancy Meyers (It’s Complicated). De Niro plays the unlikely “intern” of the title, a retired widower who rejoins the workforce via a seniors program at a website run by Hathaway’s character. She’s skeptical, but he quickly becomes indispensable, both in professional matters and in advising her about her family life. (The Movie Network)
