Only when he appears do the subjects realize the situations have been staged, and there’s interest to be had not only in what they do, but in how they reflect afterward on their actions — or inactions — once they know what’s really going on. A superior drama of raw emotion and quiet power, director Clint Eastwood’s 2003 version of the Dennis Lehane bestseller boasts Oscar-winning work by Sean Penn and Tim Robbins as childhood friends reunited by a present-day tragedy that sparks memories of a past trauma. A shocking murder forces the two men and a policeman peer (Kevin Bacon) to relive a nightmare. (Encore)

MOVIE: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

Teamed previously in Divergent, Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort are enormously affecting in director Josh Boone’s 2014 screen version of John Green’s bestseller about the relationsh­ip between two young members of a cancer support group. They share an offbeat, bemused approach to life that cements their romance, even taking them on an overseas adventure together. Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe and Sam Trammell also star. (W)

MOVIE: THE NIGHT BEFORE

Since Ethan (Joseph GordonLevi­tt) tragically lost his parents in a December 2001 car wreck, his buddies Isaac and Chris (Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie) have made it a point to spend every Christmas Eve with their buddy. As 2015 arrives, they resolve to end this tradition by crashing an event that’s the Holy Grail of invitation-only Christmas parties. (The Movie Network)
