Mother and baby struck in St. Albert crosswalk

- PAIGE PARSONS

A St. Albert driver was issued a $776 traffic ticket after striking a woman and her two-month-old baby in a stroller at a crosswalk.

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. Friday at Hebert Road and Sunset Boulevard.

The 21-year-old man was driving out of a parking lot, going about 10 km/h.

As he turned his red Chevrolet Malibu westbound onto Hebert Road, he collided with a 34-yearold woman who was walking her dog and pushing a stroller carrying her daughter.

The woman ended up on the hood of the car and the stroller was knocked over.

The woman and baby were taken by ambulance to hospital as a precautionary measure, but both were released later Friday.

RCMP believe the angle of the sun may have interfered with the driver’s vision.

The man was issued a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

The incident was one of two collisions in the Edmonton area this past week that involved a mother and young child being struck while crossing a road.

On Saturday, a 21-year-old woman was taken to Edmonton hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries after she and her two-year-old son were hit by a vehicle crossing Township Road 464 near the Edmonton International Raceway.

The toddler was taken to hospital, but appeared uninjured. Police are still trying to determine if charges will be laid in connection with the collision.
