This one’s for fans of video games and hockey

2UP: SECOND PLAYER ★ ★★ Stage 26 Garneau Theatre

Here are the things I like: scones, babies, boxing, and Newsworld.

Here are the things I don’t like: liver, high heels, mortgages and motorbikes that fart loudly.

Here are things I know virtually nothing about: video games and hockey. I mention the above only because I was assigned to review 2UP: Second Player, presented by the local sketch comedy troupe, Mostly Water Theatre.

It’s about video games and hockey, which leaves me in a difficult position.

Good news! There is nothing about liver in 2UP, so I am not disinclined to like it. On the other hand, no babies make an appearance, which would have perked me up considerably.

Having issued this disclaimer, I must commend stars Matt Stanton and Trent Wilkie for completely holding my attention with their well-produced series of short films and cartoons, sketches, videos and songs (they are also musicians) about gaming and the Oilers (apparently the latter are a bit of a disappointment).

If you grew up in the 1980s and 1990s and have something to say about Pac Man, Super Mario, The Settlers of Catan, or the 2011 NHL draft, come on down to the Garneau Theatre to catch this gig. The writing ( by the same folks who bring you The Irrelevant Show) is punchy and often plain silly, which works for me, even if there was nothing in the show about scones or boxing.
