Fun with interactive zombies

- Tom Murray

UNDEAD OR ALIVE: AN APOCALYPSE SURVIVAL GUIDE ★ ★★ Stage 25, The Almanac

Less of a play and more of a practical seminar on survivalist skills, Undead or Alive addresses all of the pertinent details that you will regret not having considered when the inevitable zombie apocalypse hits us.

Using a projector and a fistful of zombie bucks to entice audience participation, co-hosts Tori Mountain and Wade Kliffguard quickly and thoroughly make their way through such essential survival topics as what weapons are best for close-in battle, where the most secure location for hiding would be, and who you should choose for your “zombie team.”

This is the purest of nerd entertainment, but it’s actually not necessary to be obsessed with zombies to enjoy the show. The enthusiasm and humour are such that you’ll get pulled in regardless of whether you’ve ever daydreamed about using a machete on a rotting, shambling member of the undead.

There’s a twist to all of this. The first half of the show addresses preparation; the second half lets the audience participate, as Mountain and Kliffguard divide the group into zombies and humans for a more interactive (and physical) ending than your average Fringe play gives you.

Hint: make sure to collect lots of zombie bucks. Add a half star more to the rating if you’re a fan of the Walking Dead.
